The history of Harley Davidson - The legend lives!

Arthur Davidson and William S. Harley were school friends who shared a mechanical passion and a strong desire to join the other motorcycle pioneers. They rekindled their relationship while working at the same factory in Milwaukee. Together they began to study mechanics focusing on motorcycle engines.

In 1901 they had four engines designed and ready to be fitted to bicycle frames. In 1903 the first Harley-Davidson motorcycles were built.

The brand name become very famous and appeared in ads and articles describing the motorcycle that would become a legend.  Three motorcycles were produced between 1903 and 1904 and were sold before they were even built.  During this time Walter C. Davidson Sr. and William A. Davidson joined Arthur Davidson and William S. Harley and the Harley Davidson Motor Company was officially registered with the U.S. Trade and Company Register office on September 17th 1907.  The management positions within the company  were assigned at the registration with Walter C. Davidson as President, William A. Davidson as Vice-President and Works Manager, Arthur Davidson as Secretary and General Sales Manager, and William S. Harley to serve as Chief Engineer and Treasurer. Even though the titles were officialy assigned, each person could intervene in all sectors.

In 1904 Harley-Davidson began participated in motorcycle racing   and benefited from commercial implications of the numerous victories won by their bikes and in 1913  the company decided to establish an official racing team.  Early racers such as Ralph Hepburn and Eddie Brink put Harley on the track and won races with these machines, later Joe Petreli and Red Parkhurst. Joe Petreli first raced on an Indian motorcycle, and then made a name for himself by racing Harley-Davidson's. From 1926 untill 1931 Harley interrupted their racing and Petreli raced for the Excelsior Company, which was shut down in 1931. Petreli again raced for Harley when the company started their race teams back in 1931.  Red Parkhurst became a big winner and had a long career of motorcycle racing for Harley. Participating in motorcycle racing gave Harley an edge on research and development of their motorcycles.

Harley Davidson motorcycle became the symbol of American individualism and ended up "KING OF THE ROAD", all in 100 years.

Live to ride, ride to live!

Dearest Bob,

I just reviewed your wonderful website. It has been a while since I have looked at it. Once again (just like in the beginning) - I got the chills, a feeling of serenity and an overwhelming gratitude of love and friendship. You are one of most wonderful human beings I have ever met and I thank God each day for our relationship.

I really do appreciate what you're doing. It's not often that a public speaker, for lack of a better word, "speaks to me." Stay strong, it's a fight and I'm joining you!!!

Dear Mr. Bowers,

After I read your mini biography in the WSJ, I felt compelled to check out your website. I felt your story was one of true inspiration that needed to be told. Therefore, I wanted to email you just to thank you and praise you for the wonderful work that you do because not only are you breaking down stereotypes, but you're utilizing and employing the power of a negative situation into a very enlightening and influential one. You're showing the world that this condition is not going to win, and just by the work that you do is simply phenomenal and I just thought you deserved to be told that. I do not have AIDS nor can even begin to relate to what you must go through on a daily basis, but I work in the human services field and deal with a lot of individuals who could really use a mentor like yourself. So, keep up good work! P.S. You really look fantastic, especially the pictures of you on the bike. Very nice.

Sincerely, Betty Kuhlman

I WORK AT THE OAKLAND COMMUNITY SCHOOL. AND I HAVE TO SAY THAT
YOU REALLY GOT TO THE KIDS TODAY. MAN, I NEVER SAW THOSE KIDS SO INTO A SPEAKER LIKE THEY WERE WITH YOU. FUCK THEY WERE QUIET, SHIT THAT MEANS THAT THEY WERE REALLY THINKIN ABOUT THE FUCKING TRUTH. WE ALWAYS HAVE SOMEBODY FROM THE COUNTY COME IN AND TALK ABOUT AIDS. BUT YOU GOT TO THEM. TAKE IT FROM A GUY THAT HAS BEEN WITH THESE KIDS FOR ABOUT 3 YRS. YOU KNOW I FEEL LIKE A FATHER TO THESE KIDS. BUT YOU LIKE OPENED THESE KIDS UP TO A NEW LEVEL WITH AIDS. THOSE KIDS ASKED ME SO MANY QUESTIONS ABOUT YOU WHEN YOU LEFT. HA HA HA, YOU WERE COOL. YOU WERE THE TALK OF THE SCHOOL, I TOLD THE STAFF THAT THEY WERE MISSING THE BEST SPEAKER WE EVER HAD HERE AT THE SCHOOL. THEY LIKED HOW YOU DIDN'T BULLSHIT WITH ANY ANSWERS AND DIDN'T HIDE ANYTHING. SHIT THAT'S HOW I AM WITH THESE KIDS, MAN I WISH WE HAD SOMEONE TALK TO THESE KIDS MORE LIKE THAT YOU KNOW. DON'T SUGARCOAT SHIT. TELL THEM HOW THIS SHIT IS KILLIN GOOD FUCKIN PEOPLE LIKE YOURSELF. TELL THEM THE TRUTH ABOUT WHAT'S GOIN ON OUT THERE BEYOND THE WALLS THAT GUIDE THEM. HEY I JUST WANTED TO SAY THANKS FOR TALKIN TO THESE KIDS AND LETTING THEM IN ON YOUR LIFE. IT TAKES A STRONG PERSON TO OPEN UP TO THESE KIDS. THANKS MAN, I GOT MUCH LOVE FOR YOU. FIGHT ON!

Buell Motorcyles-American Motorcycles-logo

It was Erik Buell's passion for racing that led to the development the first Buell motorcycle.

A successful privateer roadracer himself in the late 1970s to early '80s, Erik Buell built his own race bike to meet the rules for the AMA's premiere Formula 1 class. The RW750, a handbuilt and raw pure race bike, was the first official Buell motorcycle. Buell Motorcycles photos-RW750It was a brutally fast a contender in the series, but one year later, the AMA changed the class rules leaving the RW750 without a home. Erik Buell regrouped and began to focus his efforts on building a premium street bike. He translated his trilogy of technology principles from that first race bike into the RR1000 street bike, and, as the saying goes, the rest is history.
