I was honored to have received a scholarship to the 2005 North American AIDS Treatment Action Forum (NATAF) conference in Oaxaca, Mexico last November. With hundreds of participants from around the globe, it proved to be a wonderful learning experience. We were provided with translation, food, entertainment and accommodations.  It was such a treat to see my friends from the AIDS Treatment Activists Coalition, as well as from the Campaign to END AIDS. I also roomed with my friends Mary and Theresa who helped me tremendously in my translation. Hablo muy poco español. Thank you Mary and Theresa! The conference supplied a wide variety of treatment, care and advocacy issues by some terrific presenters from the United States and Mexico. It was also a nice opportunity to network and meet some incredible new friends. The people of Oaxaca, Mexico were absolutely welcoming and the sights and shopping were plentiful. On Wednesday morning I joined Dayon and Claudia on a visit of a lifetime to the ruins of Monte Alban. I can't even begin to tell you what a beautiful and spiritual place this is!

Pirate,

You continue to amaze me, my friend, that, even when your health falters, you continue your mission to educate our kids. You are a hero in every sense of the word. What an honor to have you for a friend.

~Marty

Bob,

Really I think that what you are doing is a God given gift, cause everything happens for a reason and this is your destiny and it was meant to be, that you could be this spoke person about this subject that lots of people don't want to hear of... I think you and everyone like you are like angels, people need to hear your stories and opinions to have a second thought....

Much love and God bless / Ida

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.

HIV positive speaker and AIDS activist Bob Bowers, One Tough Pirate, also known simply as "Da Pirate," has been living with and surviving HIV/AIDS for 25 years. Bob started as a youth HIV/AIDS educator  with peer education programs in Los Angeles shortly after his diagnosis. To broaden his personal message of prevention through education, hope and awareness of the disease, Bob founded the nonprofit HIV/AIDS educational organization, HIVictorious, Inc. in 2005. HIVictorious addresses youth HIV/AIDS education and prevention and provides AIDS awareness in Madison, Wisconsin and throughout the United States through Bob's public speaking and it's AIDS awareness poster contest, "What if it Were You?" Mr. Bowers long-term survivor of HIV/AIDS, and someone who has lost dozen of friends to AIDS, Bob is wholeheartedly committed to educating today's youth and young adults, about the realities of HIV/AIDS as well as living with AIDS long-term. Mr. Bowers is a champion for hope and survival despite some of the difficult circumstances that we ALL face in life.
